Nothing new happening?
Well, we are studying, studying, studying…the grand finale of three years as student at St Mellitus College.
A bit scruffy around the edges, Edda's endless essay deadline extensions, staring at a computer screen to make sense of some pretty challenging conundrums, never enough time for anything else, yet….we wouldn't have wanted to miss the amazing opportunity of the training we received over these last three years. After all, this is what we thought we would be doing right at the beginning of our married life almost 18 years ago…

Christoph's ordination will be at the end of June - as you can see he practiced really from the age of two.
Edda will complete the foundations degree in May 2013, once she submitted two further assignments in the course of the next academic year.
For now it's two more assignments for both of us before the end of June.

I've just finished reading this book for the first time. It has been on my "bucket list of books" for a long time and my interest was piqued again when it was mentioned in a BBC dramatisation of the early life of country vet James Herriot. What a good book! Told from the perspective of young private Paul Bäumer, whose teacher persuades a whole class to volunteer when war breaks out, it gets under the skin of a lost generation of young men, destroyed by the First World War, whether they survived it or not. The book was published in the German original in 1929 and became an immediate bestseller. But only ten years later, they were marching again. I've read it in the German original, so I don't know how good the English translation is, but the grit and poetry of the language in the German version is deeply affecting.

Here is an excerpt from the last few pages (courtesy of Google Books preview: http://bit.ly/ySYE1w)

"I have been given fourteen days' rest because I swallowed a bit of gas. I sit all day in a little garden in the sunshine. There will soon be an armistice, I believe in it too, now. Then we shall go home.

My thoughts stop there and I can't push them on any further. What attracts me so strongly and awaits me are raw feelings - lust for life, desire for home, the blood itself, the intoxication of escaping. But these aren't' exactly goals.

If we had come back in 1916 we could have unleashed a storm out of the pain and intensity of our experience. If we go back now we shall be weary, broken-down, burnt-out, rootless and devoid of hope. We shall no longer be able to cope."

A few days later, on one of the last days of the war, private Bäumer is killed. The daily German war report for the day states that all was quiet on the Western front. "… his face looked so composed, as if he were nearly content that it had ended like this."

Gerade habe ich dieses Buch fertig gelesen. Es ist schon lange auf meiner "Muss ich irgendwann mal lesen" Liste und mein Interesse wurde wieder neu geweckt durch eine Erwähnung in der BBC Verfilmung über den jungen James Herriot ("Der Doktor und das liebe Vieh"). Der Erzähler ist der junge Paul Bäumer. Seine ganze Abiturklasse wird vom Sportlehrer überredet sich freiwillig zu melden als der erste Weltkrieg ausbricht. Es geht unter die Haut wie eine ganze Generation junger Männer durch den Krieg zerstört wird, egal ob sie ihn überleben oder nicht. Das Buch wurde im deutschen Original 1929 veröffentlicht und wurde sofort zum Bestseller. Aber nur zehn Jahre später marschierten die Deutschen wieder. Die Sprache ist kernig, authentisch und poetisch zugleich - anrührend.

Hier sind die letzten Absätze:

"Es kann nicht sein, daß es fort ist, das Weiche, das unser Blut unruhig machte, das Ungewisse, Bestürzende, Kommende, die tausend Gesichter der Zukunft, die Melodie aus Träumen und Büchern, das Rauschen und die Ahnung der Frauen, es kann nicht sein, daß es untergegangen ist in Trommelfeuer, Verzweiflung und Mannschaftsbordells.

Die Bäume hier leuchten bunt und golden, die Beeren der Ebereschen stehen rot im Laub, Landstraßen laufen weiß auf den Horizont zu, und die Kantinen summen wie Bienenstöcke von Friedensgerüchten.

Ich stehe auf.

Ich bin sehr ruhig. Mögen die Monate und Jahre kommen, sie nehmen mir nichts mehr, sie können mir nichts mehr nehmen. Ich bin so allein und so ohne Erwartung, daß ich ihnen entgegensehen kann ohne Furcht. Das Leben, das mich durch diese Jahre trug, ist noch in meinen Händen und Augen. Ob ich es überwunde habe, weiß ich nicht. Aber so lange es da ist, wird es sich seinen Weg suchen, mag dieses, das in mir "Ich" sagt, wollen oder nicht.

Er fiel im Oktober 1918, an einem Tage, der so ruhig und still war an der ganzen Front, daß der Heeresbericht sich nur auf den Satz beschränkte, im Westen sei nichts Neues zu melden.

Er war vornübergesunken und lag wie schlafend an der Erde. Als man ihn umdrehte, sah man, daß er sich nicht lange gequält haben konnte; sein Gesicht hatte einen so gefaßten Ausdruck, als wäre er beinahe zufrieden damit, daß es so gekommen war."

Oh yes, lots of stupid mistakes we can recount from the last year. Here is a taster:

Christoph: loves drinking tea and soft drinks while working at his computer. A couple of years ago he killed his keyboard that way when he toppled a sticky drink, which then caused creative automatic writing. Brandnew keyboard (and this being Apple they are never cheap!) - same mistake a few months ago!! Christoph turned into Rumpelstiltskin, but luckily it was only water this time, so after a good dry-out the keyboard worked again (and still does)!

Edda: Tried to laminate a small item with the church laminator. Instead of using the protective pouch assigned for such jobs, she just mounted it on a piece of cardboard. The cardboard wrapped itself around the barrel of the machine and shut it down. Luckily a member of the church gifted in repairs of all kinds revived the machine. So Edda is only responsible for the death-by-paperknife of a paper shredder a couple of years ago…

And now a sip from my mug before I continue typing this entry - oops!

Oh ja, viele dummen Fehler haben wir im letzten Jahr gemacht. Hier zwei Kostproben:

Christoph liebt es, Tee oder Kaltgetränke am Computer zu trinken. Vor ein paar Jahren hat er so seine Tastatur zerstört als er ein Zuckergetränk umgeschubst hat. Die Tastatur hat danach automatisch geschrieben (und in einer Sprache die Christoph nicht versteht). Funkelnagelneue Tastatur (und die ist aus dem Hause Apple nicht ganz billig!) - gleicher dummer Fehler vor ein paar Monaten!! Christoph wird zum Rumpelstilzchen, aber zum Glück war es dieses mal nur Wasser. Nach dem Austrocknen geht sie wieder (und funktioniert immer noch)!

Edda versucht ein kleines Teil zu laminieren mit dem Kirchenlaminator. Anstatt den vorgeschriebenen Schutzumschlag zu verwenden, packt sie das Teil einfach nur auf Karton. Der Karton wickelt sich um die Walze, das Gerät gibt den Geist auf! Ein begabter Reparierer rettet den Laminator. Somit hat Edda nur einen Papierschredder auf dem Gewissen (Tod durch Brieföffner)…

Und jetzt einen Schluck Tee bevor ich weiter tippe - hoppla!

We love going on holidays. Sometimes just the two of us. Sometimes to have quality time with family and friends. Two highlights this year: Edda's short break with her friend Angelika in a beautiful chalet on the "Küchensee" ("Kitchen Lake"!) near Hamburg.

Wir lieben es Urlaub zu machen manchmal zu zweit und manchmal um richtig Zeit für Familie und Freunde zu haben. Zwei Höhepunkte in diesem Jahr: Eddas Kurzurlaub mit ihrer Freundin Angelika in einem schmucken Ferienhaus am Küchensee in der Nähe von Hamburg.

Then, in August, we caught up with Paul, Sarah, Edward, Thomas and Joseph in the Lake District and had a great day out on a little island in the middle of Coniston Water (made famous by "Swallows and Amazons"). And it nearly didn't rain!

Und dann haben wir uns im August mit Paul, Sarah, Edward, Thomas und Joseph im Lake District getroffen und hatten einen tollen Tag auf einer kleinen Insel im "Coniston Water" See. Die Insel war Schauplatz für eine 70er Jahre Verfilmung des berühmten englischen Kinderbuches "Schwalben und Amazonen". Und es hat fast nicht geregnet!

Christoph's Cystic Fibrosis is an ongoing challenge. While we are so grateful that he is as healthy as he is and able to lead a reasonably normal life, there are restrictions and struggles.

In July/August Christoph spent a week at the Royal Brompton Hospital for some intensive intravenous therapy. On our wedding anniversary he was "allowed out" so we went to the Saatchi Gallery and had a nice meal. In the midst of these times we find that God surprises us with little gifts…

In October we asked friends and family to contribute to a crucial Cystic Fibrosis research fund. Our goal of raising £5,000 seemed very audacious but through the sacrificial giving of a whole number of people we received more than £12,000 in the end! Thank you friends…

Christophs Mukoviszidose hält uns immer wieder in Atem (Wortspiel beabsichtigt!). Wir sind dankbar, dass er verhältnismäßig gesund ist und ein relativ normales Leben führen kann. Aber es gibt auch Einschränkungen und Herausforderungen. Im Juli / August war Christoph für eine Woche im Krankenhaus zur intravenösen Intensivtherapie. Und so hatten wir einen etwas anderen Hochzeitstag. Christoph hatte "Freigang" und so besuchten wir die Saatchi Galerie und hatten ein schönes Abendessen zusammen. In schwierigen Zeiten finden wir oft überraschende Geschenke Gottes…

Im Oktober baten wir Freunde und Familie um Spenden für ein wichtiges Mukoviszidose Forschungsprojekt. Unser Ziel war es £5.000 zu sammeln und das schien uns sehr ehrgeizig. Am Ende waren es mehr als £12.000 und wir haben gestaunt! Danke, liebe Freunde…

Im März waren wir auf Heimaturlaub in Süddeutschland und haben die Gelegenheit genützt, Christophs CD bei einem Konzert in Neuenburg vorzustellen. Christophs Schwester Annette und Schwager Ulf haben die Planung übernommen und sogar einen kleinen Flügel gemietet! Besonders schön war, dass Martin Paine (der auf der CD den Bass eingespielt hat) extra nach Deutschland kam um mitzuspielen (unser Schlagzeuger, Mark Bingham, erholte sich von einer Fußoperation und konnte nicht dabei sein). Unser Patensohn Marc gab eine Zugabe auf dem Klavier und wir haben viele nette Menschen getroffen, die wir schon lange nicht mehr gesehen hatten…

In March we went back to Germany to see family and friends. We used the opportunity to organise a concert . Christoph played the songs from his album "Accidents and Emergencies" and Annette and Ulf (sister and brother-in-law) even hired a proper grand piano for the church in Neuenburg! Martin Paine joined us for a couple of days especially to play bass (he played bass on the CD recordings; our drummer, Mark Bingham, couldn't come as he was recovering from a foot operation). Our godson Marc played an encore on the grand piano and we loved meeting a lot of people that we hadn't seen for a long time…

Wir lieben Urlaube. Und dieses Jahr hatten wir zwei Wochen einfach zum Entspannen.

Im Juli waren wir in Devon - wunderschöne Landschaft, herrliche Küstenspaziergänge und ein Tagesausflug auf die Insel Lundy.

We love going on holidays. This year we had two weeks, just set aside to relax and recharge.

In July we went to North Devon and enjoyed the beautiful and stunning scenery. We went on coastal path walks and spent one day on Lundy Island.

Im Oktober waren wir für eine Woche an der Algarve (Südportugal). Freunde hatten uns angeboten in ihrem Apartment zu wohnen. Das war so nahe an der Küste und so schön, dass wir fast gar nichts unternommen haben - außer Strandwanderungen, viel Lesen, die BBC Verfilmung von "Bleak House" (Charles Dickens) anzuschauen und Freunde aus unserer Gemeinde zu treffen, die auch in der Nähe Urlaub machten. Die größte "Spannung" kam dann am Schluss: Als wir von Faro zurückfliegen wollten, fanden wir dass der Flughafen beim nächtlichen Sturm stark beschädigt worden war. Die Folge war eine lange Verzögerung und viel Humorbedarf im überfüllten Terminal...

In October we had one week of total-stress-free relaxation in the Algarve (South Portugal). Friends made it possible for us to stay in their apartment very near the coast. We didn't do much at all apart from walking along the beach, reading a lot, watching the whole boxed set of the BBC productions of "Bleak House" and meeting up with friends from church who were also staying in Portugal.

The biggest "thrill" came at the end: When we arrived at the airport ready to fly back home, we found that parts of the terminal's roof had collapsed during a storm in the night before (some of the damage can be seen on the left hand side (dent in the roof). Long delays (and a serious need for sense-of-humour-injection) followed…

Today we are recovering from the stresses and strains of the busy Christmas season. Ok, so Christmas is over for another year - but is it? Traditionally many Christians have celebrated the "Twelve Days of Christmas" starting on Boxing Day / St Stephen's Day and ending on Epiphany - January 6th.

There is also a famous and not-to-be-taken-too-seriously English carol with the same title (see YouTube video below, lots of other fun versions on YouTube if you search for ... You know what)

Heute erholen wir uns vom Weihnachtsstress. So, dann ist Weihnachten ja mal wieder vorbei für ein Jahr, oder? Viele Christen feiern traditionell die zwölftägige Weihnachtszeit: Vom Stefanstag (26. Dezember) bis Epiphanias am 6. Januar. Und es gibt auch ein berühmtes (und nicht zu ernst zu nehmendes) englisches Weihnachtslied mit dem Titel (siehe Youtube Video unten, auf Youtube gibt es noch jede Menge anderer lustiger Versionen. Einfach ... Na ihr wisst schon was ihr ins Suchfeld eintippen müsst).

... on the tube on our way to St Mellitus to study. In 2011 we have continued to train for a diploma (Edda) and ordination / BA Theol (Christoph). It has been very rewarding and quite stretching. Since November Edda has switched to Wednesday evenings for lectures which works better for her, but we miss the shared experience on Mondays... (below: Christoph and some of his colleagues at a residential study weekend, and - yes - we did study as well)

Montag morgen in der U-Bahn auf dem Weg zum Studieren. Dieses Jahr haben wir beide fleißig weiterstudiert am St Mellitus College in London: Edda für ein "Diploma", Christoph für die Ordination / B.A. Das Studieren neben der Arbeit bringt viel Gewinn und viel Streß. Seit November geht Edda am Mittwochabend zum Kurs - das passt besser in ihren Arbeitsrhythmus, aber die gemeinsamen Studienmontage vermissen wir. So begannen Edda und Christoph das neue Jahr 2011…

2011 was the year when the re-ordering of our church in Gerrards Cross got serious. With it came a whole new pattern of doing Sundays - partly due to space restrictions during building work, partly because a rethink of our service pattern was due anyway (more later). Here is a video walk-through of what the re-ordered church might look like:

2011 war das Jahr in dem unser Kirchenumbau endlich in die Schlussphase startete. Gleichzeitig dachten wir über eine Neuordnung unserer Sonntagsgottesdienste nach. Ein Grund war der erwartete Platzmangel während der Bauarbeiten, ein weiterer Grund, dass eine Neugestaltung der "Gottesdienstlandschaft" sowieso überfällig war. Hier ist ein Video das einen Eindruck davon gibt, wie die Kirche nach dem Umbau ungefähr aussehen wird…

It's been quite a year and we would love to give you a few windows into what we have been up to.
So from Christmas Day we will review our year daily until 6 January - our very own twelve days of Christmas!
In the meantime: Have a very happy Christmas 2011!

This year we bought a "pyramid" which is a traditional East German Advent and Christmas decoration. We stumbled upon it in a shop here in England and fell in love with it. It has resonances for both of us of the Christmas seasons of our childhood.

We are near Lille for a residential study week and have taken the opportunity of a free afternoon to go to Ypres to visit the World War 1 Flanders war graves and memorials. Very sobering.

Dear friends,

This is a blog post asking you for money. So if that's a show stopper for you, please don't read on.

Many of you will know that I have Cystic Fibrosis, a genetic disease that is degenerative and affects mostly the lungs and the digestive system. My older sister Annette also has CF.

We are both in our 40s and relatively rare creatures, as many CF patients die much younger.

I thank God that I am reasonably well and can lead an active life. However, I have felt the effects of the disease much more in the last few years. My therapy is getting more complicated and takes up a considerable portion of my day. I am also very much aware that the overwhelming majority of CF patients are far worse off.

Last month I received intensive intravenous treatment at the Royal Brompton Hospital in London. They are one of the leading CF research hospitals in the world. I am so grateful for the good care I receive from them. I am also impressed about the progress of genetic research and the possibility of "correcting" the faulty CF gene in the lungs by "smuggling in" a healthy one.

This research is now at a crucial stage.

But there aren't enough funds to progress to the next phase.

By the end of October (i.e. in four weeks' time), Cystic Fibrosis Trust, the only CF charity in the UK, will have to raise £6 million to allow this project to go forward. The goal is to raise £1 million of that sum through individual supporters. That's a hugely ambitious goal and many volunteers have helped to close that gap.

This is why I am asking you to help by giving whatever amount you can. With your help I would love to raise at least £5,000 towards this shortfall.

Mit diesem Blogeintrag bitte ich Euch um eine Spende. Wenn Ihr das unangenehm findet, dann lest bitte nicht weiter.

Viele von Euch wissen, dass ich Mukoviszidose / Cystische Fibrose (CF) habe. CF ist ein Gendefekt der degenerativ ist und vor allem die Lunge und das Verdauungssystem betrifft. Meine ältere Schwester Annette hat ebenfalls CF.

Wir sind beide in unseren Vierzigern und deshalb recht seltene Exemplare dieser Krankheit, da viele Patienten deutlich früher sterben.

Ich bin Gott so dankbar, dass es mir einigermassen gut geht und ich ein aktives Leben führen kann. Allerdings habe ich in den letzten Jahren eine deutliche Verschlechterung bemerkt - die tägliche Therapie nimmt immer mehr Zeit in Anspruch. Mir ist auch schmerzhaft bewusst, dass die überwältigende Mehrheit der CF Patienten deutlich schlechter dran ist.

Im August war ich eine Woche im Royal Brompton Krankenhaus in London zur Intensivtherapie. Das "Brompton" ist weltweit eines der führenden Forschungskrankenhäuser für CF. Ich werde dort sehr gut "versorgt" und bin beeindruckt vom Fortschritt in der genetischen CF Forschung. Die Möglichkeit das korrupte Gen in der Lunge zu korrigieren durch das Einschleusen eines normalen Gens scheint zum Greifen nahe.

Dieses Forschungsprojekt ist jetzt in einer kritischen Phase.

Aber im Augenblick gibt es nicht ausreichende finanzielle Mittel um mit dem nächsten Stadium der Patientenforschung zu beginnen.

Bis Ende Oktober muss der CF Trust (die Organisation in England die die Forschung finanziert) £6.000.000 aufbringen, damit das Projekt gestartet werden kann. Davon sollen £1.000.000 durch private Spender aufgebracht werden. Ein ehrgeiziges Ziel, bis jetzt haben hunderte von Freiwilligen geholfen, um dieses Ziel hoffentlich zu erreichen.

Deshalb bitte ich Euch mitzuhelfen, egal wie viel Ihr geben könnt. Mit Eurer Hilfe würde ich gerne mindestens £5.000 für dieses Projekt aufbringen.
